The Engineers for Community Development Internship Program is a two-month immersive initiative by ASME Foundation India aimed at engaging Mechanical Engineering students entering their 3rd and 4th year in meaningful rural development work. The program provides students with an opportunity to work closely with rural communities in Bihar, supporting skill development initiatives and evaluating the impact of technology-enabled interventions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through hands-on field exposure, community engagement, and impact assessment, interns will gain practical insights into socially relevant engineering applications while contributing to sustainable community development.
Scope of Work
The scope of work for the Engineers for Community Development Internship shall include, but not be limited to, the following activities:
1. Community Engagement and Rapport Building
Engage with assigned rural communities in collaboration with program implementation partners and technology providers. Build trust and rapport with community members through regular interaction and participation in local activities. Understand community needs, challenges, and socio-economic contexts relevant to the deployed technologies.
2. Assessment of Technology Effectiveness
Evaluate the effectiveness of devices deployed in the community in terms of their intended purpose and usability. Assess whether the technology meets the functional requirements and addresses the targeted community needs. Document observations related to performance, reliability, and acceptance of the devices by the community.
3. Assessment of Technology Efficiency
Analyze the efficiency of the deployed devices with respect to cost savings, time savings, and productivity improvements for the community. Collect qualitative and quantitative data from users to measure improvements in daily activities or livelihoods. Identify gaps, limitations, and opportunities for optimization of the technology.
4. Data Collection and Reporting
Maintain systematic records of field observations, interactions, and findings throughout the internship period. Prepare and submit a comprehensive internship report detailing experiences, assessments, insights, and recommendations. Highlight the social impact of engineering interventions in alignment with relevant SDGs.
5. Knowledge Sharing and Outreach
Participate in experience-sharing sessions or events organized by ASME Foundation India. Present key learnings, outcomes, and impact stories to students, engineers, and other stakeholders. Act as ambassadors of community-centric engineering and socially responsible innovation.
